PHOENIX — The city of Tempe is launching a new program that will test devices that can translate over 200 languages, according to a news release.
The program will introduce three Instant Language Assistant devices that were created by Translate Live LLC. The program will help non-English speaking residents by giving them the ability to communicate better when accessing city services.
“Everyone in the city of Tempe deserves to be understood when accessing city services. This is another step towards making Tempe more inclusive and equitable,” Mayor Corey Woods said.
The program will run from February through October and devices can be accessed at the following places:
- Escalante Multi-Generational Center.
- Tempe City manager’s office
- Tempe clerk’s office (through mid-March) then will be moved to the Tempe Public Library.
How do the Tempe devices work?
Device users can start a conversation by selecting the preferred language or dialect, or by speaking or typing. Conversations are then translated and shown on the device. The devices also include a voice-to-text feature that aids users with hearing challenges.
The devices have end-to-end encryption which will ensure conversations are private and secure. Each interaction with the devices includes a survey that will allow users to share feedback on the program.
